A monthly series addressing hot topics in sports, content and culture
Charlotte, NC (July 25, 2022) – Wright Creative announced today the debut of their latest project, “Press Pause,” a new podcast exploring a variety of socially relevant topics covering the full media gamut of culture, content, and sports. The show is available on all popular podcast platforms, including iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Tidal, and Google.
Wright Creative co-founders Heather Keets Wright and Mark W. Wright will share hosting duties and serve as thoughtful moderators for each episode.
Wright, a former writer at ESPN Magazine and The Undefeated (now Andscape), kicks off the first episode with a conversation around Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and the NCAA’s landmark decision to allow athletes to make money off their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). Wright led a panel of esteemed experts in the HBCU space, including Jasher Cox, Director of Athletics at Allen University; Dr. Trayvean Scott, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics at Grambling State University; and ESPN commentator Tiffany Greene.
During this conversation, critical questions are explored, such as the future of NIL and whether HBCUs and their student-athletes are lagging behind better-funded Predominantly White Institutions (PWI).
“We’ve been talking about launching our own podcast platform for a while now, and we couldn’t have thought of a more relevant and timely topic,” explained Wright. “While the landmark decision to allow college athletes to benefit off of their name, image and likeness is still new and fresh, we felt it was important to ask some critical questions, even if we don’t yet have the answers.”
“I feel honored to have been a part of the inaugural ‘Press Pause’ episode,” said Cox. “I think most institutional leaders will agree that there is still a ton to learn here, but seeing top recruits go to HBCUs, smaller Power 5s, and Group of 5s is the parity we all desire to have in intercollegiate athletics.”
“It is important for our student-athletes to be in a space to earn money through NIL and the sponsorships they receive,” added Dr. Scott. “We are in a different wave of the future, and student-athletes are finally seeing the fruits of hard work.”
