Watch Out World Music Movement Enrichment Center Uses Music to Enrich the Lives of Youth and Adults to Help Them Discover the Musical Genius that Lies Within.
“Watch Out World ‘Because Here We Come”
CHARLOTTE, NC (August 12, 2011) Watch Out World (W.O.W )Music Movement Enrichment Center opens its doors to the public Aug. 19, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., in the heart of Charlotte’s arts district (NoDa) inside of the Art House , home of Latibah Collard Green Museum, located at 3103 Cullman Ave. This opening will be during NoDa’s third Friday gallery crawl.
In a time where the Mecklenburg County school system is cutting extracurricular activities and all Pre-K centers are being closed, Jessica S. Macks, CEO of J Macks, LLC, found these facts to be unacceptable and as a result, decided to open the W.O.W Music Movement Enrichment Center to benefit other children like herself.
“If I was not given the opportunity to participate in any programs while in school I would not know where I would be today,” says Macks.
At the age of 16, Macks and childhood friend Kabra Benford started a gospel choir at their high school because of gang violence and high frustration of the students at Conway High School in Conway S.C. Little did they know that this would be the beginning of a much greater idea to harness music to engage students. This opportunity began teaching them skills ranging from vocabulary and expression to self-regulation.
“Even though the thought of pulling these programs away from the public school system made me angry, I felt that something had to be done no matter the cost,” says Macks.
W.O.W Music Movement was given to Macks as a vision from God to open and discover the musical talents that lies in everyone. “Music allows us to express ourselves and learn about the world around us,” Macks explains. “We are all brought into this world with the love of music and movement inside of us. You never have seen a baby who doesn’t perk up when they hear a certain song or begin to wiggle their little bottoms to a beat. Those things aren’t taught. It is an important gift from God that no one should be allowed to live without. That’s why I have coined the phrase: Music is life and life is Music.”
