The Amen Corner- Great Local Theatre At Its Best

On Q Productions presents its third show of Season 3: The Sound of Music with the classic, The Amen Corner by James Baldwin January 13-28, 2012 at the Duke Energy Theater, 345 N. College St. This riveting adaptation is directed by Ruth E. Sloane, with choreography by LaTanya Johnson.

Written in 1954, and set in Harlem 1940s, this work deals with the poverty of the era and the role of the church in the African American community.  The play begins with a self-anointed Harlem store front preacher, Margaret Alexander, delivering a fiery sermon to her congregation. She lives in an apartment below the church with her 17-year-old son and church pianist, David, who is determined to follow in the footsteps of his father, Luke, a jazz musician. When the errant husband and father returns home, he is deathly ill; Luke confronts Margaret about her role in breaking up the family in front of David and the entire congregation. In turn, Sister Margaret finds herself losing everything, but coming to terms with her own true sense of faith. This three-act play will connect you to the soul of gospel music.
