True Life by Pariss Michelle: I’m a Little Black Dress Advocate

Fashion is all about self-expression and what you wear says a lot about you. Before you even introduce yourself to someone, that person has already formed an opinion of you based on your attire. This is one of the many reasons why it is so important to put your best foot forward.

We all have our own ideas of what looks best. Everyone has his or her own personal style, unique flair and follows different trends. Fashion to me, is similar to art, there’s no right or wrong as long as you wear it with confidence. If you want to take it back with denim overalls or acid washed jeans, don’t let anyone stop you from doing so. As long as you feel good wearing it, others will get the same vibe. Whether you’re wearing something that we haven’t seen in decades or something that we have yet to see, wear it with your chin up, a smile and work it out!

Audrey Hepburn wearing a classic "LBD" in the iconic film "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

In the world of fashion things are constantly changing. Although we’ve given up on a lot of trends (at least until they come back in style) one thing is for certain, a little black dress always goes. French designer, Coco Chanel is responsible for the fashion staple. After being featured in Vogue in the early 1920’s, the Little Black Dress was born. The LBD became famous because of its simplicity and was worn by women of different social classes.

When I was growing up, my mom made sure she gave me tons of advice on etiquette and appropriate attire. One tip I will never forget is to always keep a little black dress in my wardrobe. A LBD literally fits any occasion. Little black dresses are classy, sophisticated and versatile. What I love most about the LBD is the variety and the fact that you can match it with any accessory.

The typical LBD is form fitting and short but not too short. Which is perfect for a cocktail event with cute heels and a nice clutch to bring it all together. But if you want to take that same dress to a more conservative event, simply add a classic blazer, closed toe shoes and a briefcase.

Just like any other dress, the fabulous LBD can have the back out, long sleeves, fall below the knee or have an asymmetrical sleeve. Use you own judgment when it comes to the LBD. Wherever you decide to wear it, have fun with it and accessorize to showcase your personality.

The LBD can dressed up or down to fit the occasion. It can be worn to both formal and informal events depending on the outfit you create with it. If you’re invited to an event and you’re not sure what to wear, pull out that LBD, it never goes out of style.
